Film If….

(Lindsay Anderson, 1968)

Sky Cinema Greats, 10.25pm

If there have been times in the last few decades when the institution of the English public school might have seemed a whimsical, archaic theme, that’s clearly no longer the case. Nothing if not timely viewing, If…. stars Malcolm McDowell as Mick Travis, a sixthform rebel at an august establishment that’s about to erupt spectacularly – heralding a social revolution that, in 1968, may have felt just about possible. Arthur Lowe and the inimitable Peter Jeffrey are among the upholders of the old order. This savage, rather Buñuelian broadside saw director Lindsay Anderson embarking on a new satirical path that he would pursue in the Candide-like fantasy O Lucky Man!, again with McDowell as embattled everyman Mick.
