Readers’ travel tips Spring walks in the UK Winning tip Flower power, Berkshire

Paul Adams

A walk starting from Inkpen Crocus Field will have you heading up Gallows Down with a spring in your step. A spectacular sight greets you until April – when you’ll need no convincing there are more than 400,000 of these purple delights at this wildlife trust reserve. After tearing yourself away, head past woods where noisy rooks nest. On the downs, you’ll hear skylarks.

Paul Gamble Irish Sea views, Belfast

Take the train from Belfast to Cultra and then walk through the grounds of the Ulster Folk Museum to be hit with a view of the Irish sea. A seven-mile walk north along the coast, passing through Crawfordsburn country park to Bangor, overloads the senses with beautiful spring flowers and lungfuls of sea air.

Chloe Lake District bluebells

From Muncaster Castle car park, walk through the castle grounds, with gorgeous views of Scafell Pike, Eskdale valley and Ravenglass estuary towards the Isle of Man. Wander through the bluebell woods (late April in to May) to the River Esk, where you might even see an otter. Then follow the river downstream to the Eskmeals dunes.

John McCurrie Aberdeenshire fairyland

I love the Drummy Woods and Tomnaverie Stone Circle walk from Tarland. As the path leaves the village there is a little stream and a hollow beside it carpeted in snowdrops. It’s like a fairyland. The rest of the walk is beautiful, too, taking in hillsides, fields and forest.

Morag Cotswolds to Malvern and Brecon

The walk from Prestbury, near Cheltenham, to Winchcombe, takes me straight up the Cotswold escarpment to Cleeve Common with fantastic views to the Malverns and the Brecon Beacons. Descending through old quarries then on to the original sheep dip pond following the Isbourne chalk stream and pass the paper mill to Winchcombe.
