All the Beauty and the Bloodshed

(Laura Poitras, 2022) BBC Two, 10pm

US documentarist Laura Poitras (Citizenfour, Risk) won Venice’s top prize the Golden Lion with this portrait of the artist and activist Nan Goldin, known above all for her photographic chronicling of the sexually dissident New York counterculture she inhabited. But Poitras also highlights Goldin’s tenacious campaigning against pharmaceutical barons the Sackler brothers and their expensively bought respectability as patrons in the art world

– a passionate crusade rooted in Goldin’s personal experience of the damage done by the Sacklers’ opioids. What we learn about her family background, including the tragic death of her older sister, makes this portrait all the more fearless and compelling.
