(Robin Campillo, 2018) Film4, 12.50am

Previously best known as co-writer of Laurent Cantet’s films, Campillo has also directed three fine features of his own: back-from-thedead drama The Returned, which inspired the French TV series, Eastern Boys and this dynamic evocation of the Parisian Act-Up movement. The populous cast mainly comprises young unknowns, although you’ll recognise a typically forceful Adèle Haenel (Portrait of a Lady on Fire); other performers grabbing your attention include Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, as HIV-positive militant Sean, and Arnaud Valois as the new member who becomes part of his life. Partly a historic evocation of Aids activism at its most urgent, partly a bustling ensemble piece, overall an impassioned, moving realist drama.
