US averts catastrophe as debt ceiling lifted

The US Congress passed a bill to suspend the country’s debt ceiling, sending it on to Joe Biden to sign and averting a disastrous federal default. On Wednesday the House of Representatives waved it through, after Republicans struck a deal with the president to include spending cuts. On Thursday it was approved by the Senate on a vote of 63 to 36, edging past the threshold of 60.
