Call Jane

(Phyllis Nagy, 2022) Sky Cinema Premiere, 8.20am, 9.55pm

Playwright Phyllis Nagy made her name in cinema adapting Patricia Highsmith’s The Price of Salt, which became the Todd Haynes film Carol. This is her first feature as director, a 1960s-set drama that could hardly be more urgent now, concerning America’s hard-fought steps to abortion rights. Elizabeth Banks plays Joy, a young woman who lives a traditional existence, until she discovers that her second pregnancy is life-threatening. Enter the Janes, a real-life underground feminist organisation that helped women obtain abortions. Written by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi, it was hailed at Sundance last year as serious-minded, unsentimental and involving. Kate Mara and Sigourney Weaver are the star support.
